Careers and Personal Studies

Career education and guidance is an integral part of the school curriculum.
Our Careers programme is designed to empower the career development of each student through a range of services, details of which are given below.

The Careers Centre has readily accessible careers and course information for students, parents and all departments within the school. The Careers Centre also facilitates links between the School and the community, employers, industry and tertiary institutions.

The Careers Centre, in A Block, is open during normal school hours, including before school, interval and lunchtime.

Subject Name:                LEVEL 1 CAREERS & PERSONAL STUDIES (L1 CPS)
Qualification:                   NCEA Level 1
 
Course Description:         This 2 year programme is designed to help students who are considering an apprenticeship or entry level job. Students will be encouraged to develop clear ideas of their career goals along with the skills to make realistic career decisions and plans. Subjects covered include producing a plan for the future; problem solving; writing CVs and participating in informal interviews.

Course Description:         This year students are further extended in terms of employment related units such as team work; career planning and operating a personal budget. They will also have the opportunity to be involved in Gateway where they get to try out different careers within the workplace.

Subject Name:                LEVEL 2 EMPLOYMENT SKILLS (L2 ESK)
Qualification:                   National Certificate in Employment Skills Level 2
 
Course Description:         This programme is a 'stand alone' option focussed on students becoming 'work ready' and getting prepared for the workplace during and at the end of Year 13. Students will explore employment options related to their interests and be able to make informed decisions about their future pathways. Subjects covered include writing targeted CVs; interviews in formal situations; tenancy law and recognising effective work practice.

Going on to Tertiary? If you are contemplating going on to tertiary study when you leave school remember that there are specific entry requirements to meet for both Polytechnics and Universities.

To apply for a degree course, all applicants must gain the University Entrance Standard.

Some courses require you to have taken specific subjects and have gained a specific number of credits in those subjects.

Eg:
Engineering requires 18 credits in Physics and Maths with Calculus from Table B, plus ranked over best 80 credits at Level 3. Law requires a minimum of 16 credits in one subject from Table A, plus ranked over best 80 credits at Level 3.

Check in your University Prospectus or website as requirements vary from one University to another.

If you are planning to go to University, the safest option is to take 5 subjects from the approved list, as you may be ranked over your best 80 credits at Level 3 (Excellent 4, Merit 3, Achieved/ Unit Standard 2) depending on the number of places available in each University Faculty.

For Art and Design, Architecture or any form of Graphic Design you will need a portfolio which is best gained from Art, Painting or Art Design (Graphics or Photography could be taken in addition to this).

Any students considering Health Sciences or Science should take Science subjects and 1 Mathematics subject.
