Subject Name: YEAR 10 MEDIA STUDIES (10MED)
Length of Course: Half and Full Year Course
Course Description: This course introduces students to the media
* · Students will learn to use a video camera, to edit and perform other post-production tasks.
* · Production of other media including radio, comics, magazines and newspapers will be part of the course.
*· Some relevant NCEA Unit Standards may be offered.
* · The half year option will only study film and comics. While the full year course will also look at the radio and television, newspapers and film production.
Materials Fee: $10.00. This covers the purchase of consumables such as video tapes and audio tapes.
Other Costs: Nil. Field trips may arise.
This course may lead to: Level 2 Media Studies.

Course Description: This course is offered as an alternative to the full NCEA Level 1 English course. The course is designed to develop students’ communication skills in written, spoken and visual language. Students will be offered a mixture of NCEA Level 1 Achievement Standards and Unit Standards. The emphasis in this course is on gaining 8 credits to achieve Level 1 Literacy. Many of the Unit Standards offered in the Foundation English Courses are derived from the National Certificate in Employment Skills. Students who do not succeed in gaining Achievement Standards will be offered appropriate Unit Standard equivalents.
Pre-requisite: In consultation with the student teachers will recommend Year 11 courses.

Course Description: This course progresses on from Year 9 and 10. Students will study a range of texts, experience production, conduct research and write in different styles. Some achievement standards are currently under review and some change may occur as a result.

Course Description: This course is offered as an alternative to Year 12 English. The course is designed to develop students’ communication skills in written and spoken language. Students will work towards the NCEA Level 1 AND Level 2 Certificate by completing Unit Standards and some NCEA Level 2 English Achievement Standards. The emphasis in this course is on gaining the eight literacy credits needed for Level 1 NCEA and working towards Level 2 Literacy.

Course Description: This course is offered as an alternative to NCEA Level 3 English. It is vital for those students who have yet to gain literacy at Level 1 or 2. The course is designed to develop students’ communication skills in written, spoken and visual language. One of the key objectives is to develop students’ reading skills and strategies. Adaptations will be made to the course to ensure it meets the needs of those enrolled. Students are offered Unit Standards at Level 2 and may be offered some NCEA English Achievement Standards.
Pre-requisite: A Year 11 English course

Course Description: This course progresses on from NCEA Level 2. The course involves a mixture of critical thinking and media production. Students will study the media in various forms and situations. Aspects of media studied include genre, NZ film industry, and documentary production.
Pre-requisite: Minimum of 15 credits at Level 2 English including 2.2 and/or 2.8 or with a similar number of credits in relevant subjects and HOD permission. Success at Level 2 Media Studies a distinct advantage

This course may lead to: Tertiary study of Media in the form of Communication Studies at AUT, Applied Communication Studies at MIT, Bachelor of International Communications at UNITEC, Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television (BA) and Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS) at Universities and Tertiary providers around the country and internationally
