Subject Name: YEAR 10 BEGINNERS CHINESE (10BCH)
Length of Course: Full year option.
Course Description: A fast track course for students who did not opt for Chinese in Year 9 or would like a second chance. The course will cover every day situations in the language at a slightly faster pace. At the end of the year this should lead to achievement standards at Level 1 in Year 11.

Subject Name: YEAR 10 CHINESE (10CHI)
Course Description: The Year 10 course develops the language begun in Year 9 and prepares students for NCEA Level 1 Chinese. Students will be able to converse and write in everyday language situations.

The course consists of six units:
* The weather.
* School.
* Describing people.
* Around town.
* Eating and drinking at home.
* Shopping.
Pre-requisite: Year 9 Chinese or HOD approval
Materials Fee: NIL
Other Costs: $11 Australian language competition.

Course Description: The improvement of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills up to Level 2 NCEA in the Chinese curriculum (Level 7). More grammar, structures and vocabulary are studied in the context of each unit. The topics are: Revision and Celebrations, Hobbies and Leisure Activities, Eating Out, Fashion and Clothes, Chinese History and Beliefs, and the study of Chinese Poetry.
Pre-requisite: Level 1 Chinese or HOD approval

Course Description: This course is to further develop students’ ability in Modern Standard Chinese. This course continues to emphasise learning to communicate in Chinese. More grammar and vocabulary is built up as well as sentence structures.
The course consists of six topics:

* A review of the communication functions
* The Chinese society
* A Chinese poet
* Chinese short stories
* Current events
* Employers and employees
Pre-requisite: Year 12 Chinese or HOD approval.

This course may lead to: Further study at tertiary institutions or travel, for work in tourism, commerce, etc.

French novels and poetry.

TE REO MAORI

Subject Name: YEAR 10 TE REO MAORI (10MAO)
Length of Course: Full year option.
Course Description: This year’s Maori course will build on the language covered in Year 9 and prepare students for NCEA Level 1.
The course consists of topics which are practical, and extend students’ ability to speak Maori in everyday situations.
Students also have the advantage of a Marae as their classroom.
Students participate in the active life of the school Marae throughout the year.
Pre-requisite: Year 9 Maori or approval of the HOD
This course may lead to: NCEA Level 1 Te Reo Maori.


Subject Name: LEVEL 1 TE REO MAORI (L1 MAO)
Qualification: NCEA Level 1.
Course Description: This course covers the skills and topics needed to enable students to begin to communicate their thoughts, experiences and ideas in Te Reo Maori. The course aims to strengthen and develop the language taught in Years 9 and 10. Assessment consists of four standards. The listening and speaking standards are internally assessed by the classroom teacher. Reading and writing are assessed by external examination.
