Performing Arts

Subject Name: Year 10 Drama (10DRM)
Length of Course: Half year and full year options.
Course Description: This course offers the students the opportunity to explore and develop their creative, social and communication skills. Students will participate in a wide range of activities and class work is a mixture of group and individual tasks. This course will explore both practical and theoretical aspects of theatre. This course will prepare students to enter NCEA Level 1 Drama in Year 11.

Subject Name: Year 10 Dance (10DAN)
Length of Course: Half year and full year options.
Course Description: This course offers the students the opportunity to explore aspects of movement and dance. Students will participate in a wide range of activities and class work will be conducted in groups. It will be expected of students to wear suitable clothing when participating in class work. Assessment for Year 10 is performance based. Students should have a strong interest in movement and dance. This course will prepare them to enter Level 1 NCEA Dance in Year 11.
Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Year 9 Performing Arts Dance module and/or TIC Dance approval.
Materials Fee: $10.00

Course Description: The course is made up of up to five internal assessments and one external (written exam) assessment. The course explores the use of movement, mime, voice, scripted drama and technical devices to convey meaning within a collaborative learning environment.
Pre-requisite: Year 11 Drama. Successful completion of Year 10 Drama and/or HOD Drama approval.
Materials Fee: $10 for costume design and production.
Other Costs: At least two trips to the theatre at a total cost of approximately $30.00.
This course may lead to: Level 2 Drama.

Course Description: In this course, students will explore through movement the dance elements of body awareness, space, time, energy and relationships. They will use personal experiences and imagination to express ideas in dance. Students will share movement through both formal and informal presentation and respond personally to their own and others’ dance. They will also demonstrate an awareness of dance as part of community life. Students must have a strong interest in dance and dance performance
Pre-requisite: At least eight credits in Year 10 Dance or approval of TIC Dance
Materials Fee: $10 for costume and production.

Course Description: This course provides an opportunity for students to use and explore the elements, techniques, conventions, and technologies in specific dramatic forms. They will rehearse and perform works in a range of dramatic forms. Class work is a mixture of group and individual tasks, and it is important for students to work co-operatively within a group. Students will perform a dramatic role in at least one production for an outside audience. The curriculum presents Drama under the following strands:
* Learning the language of Drama
* Developing ideas in Drama
* Communicating and interpreting meaning in Drama
* Understanding Drama in context.
Pre-requisite: 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 Drama or approval by the HOD Performing Arts.
Materials Fee: $10 for theatre design and production
Other Costs: At least two trips to the theatre at a total cost of approximately $30.00.
This course may lead to: Level 3 Drama

Course Description: The course aims to widen student’s knowledge in dance through choreography, performance history, viewing and responding to dance. Students must have a strong interest in dance. Students will expand their knowledge of Dance technique and choreographic skills. Students are required to participate in Dance workshops with external dance tutors and present both solo and group performances
Pre-requisite: 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 Dance or approval by TIC Dance.

Course Description: This course aims to refine students’ creative, social and communication skills, and their critical appreciation of drama and production processes. The students will participate and direct a range of activities, improvisation, dance, music, movement and voice presentations, scripted drama and theoretical/historical research. Class work is a mixture of group and individual tasks. Students will perform a dramatic role in several productions for outside audiences. Drama is a co-operative learning environment where students are required to:

* Take responsibility for their own learning
* Be accountable to their group for their contribution
* Support and encourage others
* Make an equal contribution to the task
* Attend class regularly

The course is made up of two external exams and up to four internal assessments.
Pre-requisite: 12 credits at Level 2 Drama or by approval of HOD
Materials Fee: $20.00 theatre design and production
Other Costs: At least two theatre trips at a total cost of approximately $30.00
This course may lead to: Drama / Music (13 MUSIC / DRAMA) Scholarship is available for appropriate students deemed capable by HOD Music / Drama.

Course Description: This course aims to display knowledge of dance history, choreographic elements, incorporate structures and demonstrate devices in choreography. Students must generate movement ideas and present through group choreography and solo dances. Students are required to participate in dance workshops and dance in a performance. Students must have a strong interest in dance and dance choreography.
Pre-requisite: 12 credits or more at NCEA Level 2 or approval of TIC Dance
Other Costs: At least two trips to the theatre at a total cost of approximately $30.00
This course may lead to: Tertiary education in dance or a profession in the dance industry
