Subject Name: YEAR 10 ART (10ART)
Length of Course: Full and Half Year options
Course Description: This course is essential for students intending to take NCEA Level 1 Art in Year 11. Students will learn skills in drawing, printmaking, sculpture and painting throughout the year. Strong drawing skills are essential to this course. Units of work will be based on themes and will reflect cultural and artistic variety. Students are encouraged to show originality and explore their creativity through assignments.
Pre-requisite: None
Materials Fee: $25.00
Stationery: Students will be required to purchase Art stationery at the start of the year. This can be purchased from the Art Department for approximately $15.00.

Subject Name: YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHY (10APH)
Length of Course: Half Year Option
Course Description: Photography covers aspects of making images focusing mainly on pinhole photography and mural painting. Students will also have some exposure to drawing, design, printmaking, 3D construction and elements of Art history. Students should therefore have an interest in knowing about Art. This course will have both practical and theoretical aspects. This course is not intended to prepare students for Year 11 Art (NCEA Level 1), but students who show strong drawing skills and creative ability are able to choose Year 11 Art with HOD permission. This course also provides students with an opportunity to sample Photography, Art and Art history, all of which are available in the senior school (NCEA Levels 2 and 3).

Course Description: The course has a practical focus and involves studies in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The course also involves research into Maori and European Art. Students must be well motivated and have good creative and problem-solving skills. The Year 11 course involves development of one theme throughout the year. Students must be prepared to do a considerable amount of homework. Year 11 Art prepares students for Year 12 Visual Art and Art History courses. Year 11 Art is both internally and externally assessed.
Pre-requisite: Satisfactory progress in Year 10 Practical Art or approval of HOD

Course Description: This course is open to any student with an interest in art, culture and history. Sound skills in English are required. The course looks at the relevance and meaning of art in societies. Students do not have to be able to draw or paint. Students will study artworks and artists and develop and understanding of how art has evolved.

This course involves study of 2 topics:
a. French Art from Neo-Classicism to Post-Impressionism.
b. New Zealand Art.

Assessment is based on research seminars, essays, tests and fieldtrips throughout the year. This subject will provide and opportunity for increased cultural awareness and enrichment for any student.
Pre-requisite: Satisfactory progress in NCEA Level 1 English

Course Description: This course involves a full year of Photography using the 35mm SLR Camera. Students must have their own 35mm SLR Camera. Course Description: The Art History Course involves in-depth study of four of the following options:

* Modern American Art
* Modern New Zealand Art

This course involves the study of both contemporary and traditional art. The New Zealand option includes historical and contemporary art study. This course involves analysis of art-works in the context of each period, studying slides and research work.

Course Description: Design is a practical and theoretical course in which students explore and develop ideas thematically. Design involves producing creative and innovative design solutions in two or three dimensions. Students work with Design briefs that involve research, the generation of creative ideas, and production of finished artwork some of which can be computer based.

Students need the ability to think and work independently and the creativity to generate and re-generate ideas in the making of artworks. Drawing and the ability to communicate ideas visually are essential to this course. Students will be required to purchase additional materials according to individual needs. Design is both internally and externally assessed.

Course Description: A practical and theoretical course in which students explore and develop ideas thematically. Photography requires the use of a 35mm SLR Camera, students must have their own camera. Students are required to have some previous experience in Photography. Students need the ability to think and work independently and the creativity to generate and re-generate ideas in the making of artworks. Students will need to be confident with darkroom procedures.

Students will learn about Photography as Art. Students will be required to purchase additional materials according to individual needs. Photography is both internally and externally assessed
