Sport is a vital part of Onehunga High School life. Our vision for sport is participation and excellence.
It is our intention to encourage as many of our students as possible to get involved in playing sport for the school and to be the very best that they can be. Every student who walks through our gates has an incredible opportunity to not only be involved in college sport, but to be the best in college sport.
Sport at Onehunga High School is improving year by year, with more codes playing in the elite grades across Auckland. Onehunga High School is proudly developing young talent and offering various development programmes to those who wish to go far in their field. Onehunga High School is working hard towards its goal of becoming one of the top co-educational sporting schools in Auckland and with 3 sport specific class running, along with morning development programmes for many students, it is only a matter of time until this one of many goals is accomplished.
We believe sport is an important dimension of the holistic learning environment that Onehunga High School offers. Students are given the opportunity to develop their character through team work, sportsmanship, goal setting, leadership, and expression of creativity. These skills will cultivate over time while participating in sport throughout their high school career. We have a proud tradition of sporting success, with many of our students gaining representative status each year.
Onehunga High School sport has recently made huge leaps, showing undeniable potential and very positive prospects for the future. Some of these recent successes include, having won the 1B title 2 years ago the 1st XV have now cemented themselves in 1A with the top schools in Auckland, along with the Premier Basketball Team who are also currently in the top Auckland Competition. With the current development programmes that are in place, Football, Cricket, Netball, Hockey, and Girls Rugby are similarly showing endless possibilities for the near future.
Many of our staff are involved in the coaching and managing of our sports teams and we also have solid input and support from within the community through former students and parents. Local businesses and trusts also play a vital part with their sponsorship and funding of sport.
