MOUNTAIN BIKING

It’s a cold morning as the boys tie their bikes onto the school trailer and head out to Woodhill forest. As the van turns off at Woodhill forest each rider’s eyes widen and their hearts start to beat faster as they are amping with anticipation of the ride ahead. Each rider gets ready in their own unique way, a quick bike check and away we go. Riding through some of the 100 km of trails at Woodhill bike park each rider shows off their own flare and speed on the trail. Xaq Takie starts to focus intensely as he attempts a 4x (very big) structure, then as he flies through the air a massive grin comes across his face. Each rider practices along all the skinny structures in the forest, with Rance Raumati and Nick Lamont showing perfect balance and stability on high structures. As the ride comes to a finish each rider starts bragging about their exploits in the van on the journey home. The mood has changed as each rider is tired and had their fill of burger king and extreme mountain biking for one day. A final question for the day is “when are we riding again?” Joe Erceg, Carlos Stanford, Hayden McPhillips, Nick Lamont and Xaq Takie all represented Onehunga High School in the Auckland Secondary Schools Mountain Biking Champs and during March and July at the Woodhill Forest Sprints. Each rider expressed that it was the “best day ever” and because of their attitude and behaviour on and off the trails, they were great ambassadors for Mountain Biking and Onehunga High School. They have also received sponsored equipment from Woodhill Bike Parks. Onehunga High School Mountain Biking Team would also like to thank the Building and Construction School students, Mr. Eastwood and Mr. Corbett for there inclusion and construction of a 4x jump and the development of what looks to be an awesome mountain biking track. Watch this space for JR O’Connor, Ben Marumaru, Joe Erceg, Nick Lamont, Rance Raumati, Xaq Takie, Mason Dobbs and Carlos Stanford, as they are the future of the Onehunga Mountain Biking Team. Good luck boys in the mountain biking events coming up, like the Woodhill Forest Relay, New Zealand Secondary School Relay, Woodhill Forest 12 hour Event and building that trail. “Through hard work and desire, comes good luck and rewards”
