School Information

Onehunga High School is committed to a partnership with its parents and community. So that this partnership will give every student the best possible chance of success, we all need to be clear about what we can reasonably expect of each other.

 Computer Resourcing
Onehunga High School maintains over three hundred networked computers. All computers are linked to the Internet using high speed frame relay connection. Students may use the computers by arrangement to complete school work and assignments. In addition to four laboratories and smaller pods, computers are grouped around the school for specialised activities such as music composition, design and graphics.

Student Internet Agreement
As part of Onehunga High School’s internet policy, all students wishing to use the internet at school must complete and return a signed ‘Internet agreement’ form. These forms are available at enrolment. All student access to the internet is closely monitored by dedicated Information Technology support staff.

School Website
Onehunga High School has its own website at http://www.ohs.school.nz. The website is frequently updated with news and important information concerning the school.

Junior Extension Programme
Onehunga High School offers an Extension Programme at Yrs 9 and 10, which includes enriching activities to broaden and challenge our most able students. The programme is designed for students who have ability, excellent achievement and a positive attitude.
Placement in this programme at Yr 9 is decided by considering information gained from pre-enrolment testing, school reports, and contact with intermediate schools. Parents of students who have been selected for the extension programme will be notified at the beginning of Term One.

Student Awards
Students can aspire to gaining a variety of awards and scholarships offered throughout their years at Onehunga High School.
All students are eligible to gain Superstar Awards throughout the year for Initiative, Good Work, Service or Responsibility. These are given by individual teachers, and draws are held at assembly for small prizes. All students gaining a Superstar Award are listed in the end of term newsletters.
In the Junior School (Yrs 9 & 10), students may be nominated by their teachers for Honours Badges awarded in four categories: Excellence in Academic Achievement, Sports Achievement, Cultural Participation and Service. These badges are awarded at the end of year Junior Awards Ceremony. At the end of Year 10 students gaining two or more of these badges over the previous years, are awarded an Honours Shield.
There a number of major study awards and scholarships available to students at Year 13 from local businesses and organizations, and a wide range of University, Technical Institute and private companies.

Homework Diary
A compulsory homework diary is available from the school at the start of the year. Students are required to use this diary to record homework they receive. Parents concerned about homework can use the diary to monitor their child’s progress. Students at Year 9 and 10 should expect between 4 and 8 hours of homework per week. Students in the Senior School should expect to do at least 10 hours of homework per week.

Peer Support Programme
Onehunga High School runs a successful Peer Support programme which involves approximately fifty trained Year 13 Peer Support leaders working in small groups with Year 9 classes. The Peer Support leaders greet Year 9 students on their first day of school and work with them through to the end of Term Two. This early and continued interaction assists the younger students to settle and feel supported as they begin their secondary education.

Parent – Teacher Meetings
Parent – Teacher report evenings are held at the start of Term Two and Term Three. These occasions provide an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss their child’s progress with classroom teachers. Other opportunities are available during the year to meet with teachers (e.g. Yr 9 parents evening, careers expo, etc).

Year 9 Stationery Pack
A Year 9 stationery pack can be purchased from Paper Plus (Onehunga branch only).

Newsletters
Parents are kept informed of school activities in newsletters which are sent home with students at the beginning of each month during term time. At the end of each term a more comprehensive newsletter is mailed home. Special notices are sent home with the students as required.

Noticeboards
Students are expected to routinely read the school Noticeboards to inform them of daily notices, sports and cultural activities.

Buses
Most of our students who use bus transport are able to use buses which arrive and leave from the front of the school.  The only students who may use the Onehunga Bus Depot are those who are not served by the school buses.
