Pastoral Care
Guidance, Discipline and Pastoral Care are important aspects of school life.
The members of our Guidance Team are trained and experienced counselors who are available to work with you on your own or in a group. They are also available to your family.
Travellers is a group programme to assist Year 9 students with the transition in to secondary school. During the first week of school, Year 9 students complete a questionnaire. Selected students are invited to join Travellers.
Our Careers Advisor advises on employment and tertiary information through seminars, pamphlets, interviews and our computer career data base. Advice and guidance throughout students’ years at high school will help them to identify career goals and the qualifications they need to support those goals.
Deans are the immediate link between school and home. Each dean follows students through five years at Onehunga High School, taking responsibility for both the progress and welfare of each student. Details of school deans is located in ‘contact details’ page of website.

Peer Support Programme
Onehunga High School runs a successful Peer Support programme which involves trained Year 13 Peer Support leaders working with Year 9 students in their form class. The Peer Support leaders meet their Year 9 students on the first day and spend considerable time with them during the first week of school. From then a weekly session is held through to the end of the second term.
Travellers’ Programme
Early in the first term Year 9 students are invited to complete a Travellers’ questionnaire. Preceding this, an information letter is sent home. Parents / Caregivers may request their child does not undertake completion of the questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire is used to identify students who would most benefit from the Travellers’ programme.
The Travellers’ Programme, which has been successfully run at Onehunga High School since 2001, enhances student transition to secondary school, assists students to make new friends and offers the opportunity to learn skills to journey through life. A Travellers’ group consists oftwelve students who meet for a weekly one hour period over seven weeks with two trained facilitators. Groups are held in Terms One, Two and Three.
