School Background
|
Onehunga High School was established in 1959 on it’s Pleasant Street site. The original roll was 190 students but it has grown gradually to a roll of more than 1500.
The school has always served the catchment of Onehunga, Royal Oak, Hillsborough and Mangere Bridge but in recent times enrolments beyond this zone have increased. Currently approximately 50% of our students are from outside the school zone.
In the early days the school was mono-cultural in character but in the 1980s it began to evolve into a truly multi–cultural school. Today the school is strongly international and enjoys all the qualities a wide range of cultures bring.
Onehunga High School is situated in one of Auckland’s oldest suburbs, overlooking the Manukau Harbour. Many of our families have long histories in the area. A large number of our students are second or even third generation students. This gives the school a strong sense of tradition and continuity.
Its proximity to the large commercial and retail area of Onehunga – Penrose has been of great benefit to the school. Links with some service clubs and businesses go back many years and a growing number of scholarships and trust funds have arisen out of this support base.
Each decade of the school’s existence has been unique in some way. For example the 1980s saw the establishment phase of self management.
The firstdecade of the 21st century has seen us move into a modernisation and development phase. The physical nature of the school is being radically changed and improved as we position ourselves to continue successfully serving the young people of our community. |
