Sports at OHS

At Onehunga High School, sport is a vital part of who we are. We value both competition and participation, ensuring all students have the opportunity to be involved—whether for excellence or enjoyment. Our aim is to foster a lifelong love of sport by encouraging teamwork, resilience, and pride. We support high-level performance through strong coaching, quality facilities, and structured programmes. We are investing in great people to deliver great experiences for our athletes. Sport at Onehunga builds character, connection, and school spirit.

Sport at Onehunga High School is going from strength to strength, with teams and individuals achieving success at Auckland, national, and even international levels. Our students are consistently stepping up to compete with pride, skill, and determination—on the field, court, track, and beyond. These results reflect not only their talent and commitment but also the quality coaching and support behind them.

The OHS Sports Academies have taken sport at OHS to the next level!

The OHS Academies programme was established in 2020.  The aim of the programme is to help raise the level of sporting performance within the school through the provision of high quality training environments for Year 9 and Year 10 students. We have definitely achieved this and we are thrilled to see sports at OHS go from strength to strength.

Sports Academies give us the ability to improve the skill levels of players at a junior level, by the time they reach senior teams they are significantly advanced. Students in this programme are pushed to be fitter, better prepared and disciplined in their health and physical fitness to perform at their best and achieve their full potential.

Sports Academies programmes improve the quality of engagement and set expectations that are clear. A culture of excellence ensures athletes strive to be the best that they can be. In addition to this, we foster a culture of enjoyment within the squads where a love of sports is developed.

In 2024, this programme is focused on our Year 9 and 10 students who participate in basketball, football, rugby, netball and volleyball.

Sports Academy Options

In 2026 we are introducing a Football and Rugby Academy programme that will run twice a week during school time as an option subject. They will complement the current before and after school Academy programmes.

The Football and Rugby Academy programmes are designed to develop competitive and successful First XI Football and First XV Rugby teams, while building player skills, teamwork, and leadership. Both academies also emphasise living the OHS WAKA values on and off the field.

All Academy trials for 2026 will take place in early November 2025.
