In 2026 we are excited to launch the OHS Learning Toolkit, Te Ara Hiranga, which brings together three years of development into a clear framework that guides all learners toward personal excellence. 

The Toolkit combines the key practices, strategies and shared language that help students understand their learning, respond to challenges and build deeper understanding over time.

Charting the Course to Excellence

  • In 2026 we are excited to launch the OHS Learning Toolkit, Te Ara Hiranga, a framework shaped over three years to guide all learners toward personal excellence. This Toolkit brings together the key practices and shared language that help students understand their learning, respond to challenges and build deeper thinking over time.

  • Learning is framed as a journey through Te Ara Whakatere. Students use the 4Rs to reflect, revise, reason and relate ideas as they encounter new learning, supported by the SOLO taxonomy which helps deepen understanding and move from simple ideas to more complex thinking.

  • Kaitiaki teachers guide students along this journey. Through regular mentoring conversations, goal setting and progress discussions, kaitiaki help students understand their strengths, identify next steps and take increasing responsibility for their progress.

  • The OHS values underpin a positive and respectful learning environment. These values shape how students engage with learning, interact with others and contribute to the school community.

  • Quality teaching sits at the centre of the Toolkit. Teachers use consistent and evidence informed approaches such as high expectation teaching, assessment for learning, explicit instruction and principles from the science of learning, all aligned with the OHS Effective Teaching Profile.

  • The Toolkit brings these elements into one clear schoolwide approach, giving students consistent expectations, shared structures and a strong sense of direction as they work steadily toward their goals.
