Samoan Language Week Reflections.

Samoan Language Week Reflections.

OHS came alive with the celebrations of Samoan language and culture last week. Deputy Principal Ms Bex Muipu reflects on the week.

A big fa'amalo and well done to the students and staff who played a part in the Samoan Language Week celebrations in Week 5, in particular Denayla Tavu’i who MC'd the entire week, Y13 leaders, and the Cultural Council for their tremendous efforts. It was a full-on week that started with an ava ceremony led by Mr. Crichton and students, attended by SLT and BOT members. Mr. Moli updated staff daily with phrases of the week, supported by his Samoan classes. The Sports & Cultural Council set up games in the gym on Tuesday for all students to join in and enjoy. Island food was provided by some families and members of the Pasifika Komiti to sell at the food market, which was a huge success. The funding will go towards the Pasifika Awards evening at the end of the year. Students from across all year levels performed in the hall in front of their peers to showcase their pride in their culture.

Overall, the week was full of positive celebrations of the Samoan culture, and we are incredibly proud of the way our students showcased their pride and shared this with their peers.
