Level 2 Health Science Academy students joined Pasifika students from other Auckland academies to attend a leadership course designed to prepare students for careers in the Health sector.
The day began with a panel of Pasifika Health professionals sharing their journeys from school to practising in their respective fields. The doctor on the panel was OHS alumna Dr Vanisi Prescott. Like many, Dr Vanisi faced her struggles. She grew up with English as her second language. Her mother was a single parent who worked multiple jobs to support the family financially. It would have been easy for Vanisi to give up her dream, but resilience, determination, and a work ethic she had learnt from her mother saw her persevere and ultimately qualify as a Doctor.
In the second session, students were split up into groups for workshops that directed students to areas of health they may be most suited for, and students began to discover the steps that they needed to take to achieve their goals.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and came back to school with a better understanding of what it will take to work as healthcare professionals and the knowledge that they can succeed if they are determined to.
