The teachers vs student debate held on Tuesday lunchtime was very well attended, perhaps because the motion, “ Students should be able to use AI as an educational tool”, is very topical for teachers and students alike.
The students, Micah Hart, Asher Tebbutt, and Daniel Grange, are members of the OHS Junior Debating Team and were very happy to argue the affirmative position. Opposing the motion were the teachers, Mr Shane Burton, Ms Brenda Dwane, and Mr Joseph Payne. The adjudicators for the occasion were Katherine Broczek, Year 9, Harley Taufelila, Year 10, and Ms Shelley Plowman.
Congratulations to everyone involved. Despite some excellent reasoning from the students who argued that AI used under strict rules is an effective way to disseminate a large amount of information efficiently, and some rather dubious arguments from the teacher team around the weaponising of AI, the teachers' had enough to win the debate on points. The popular winners from the audience on the day were the students.
Whoever you agree with, the debate was both informative and entertaining.
