After a tough weekend at the NZ Cross Country Championships, Lisa and Sarah Hellyer bounced back in style, dominating the Senior Girls 4km at the Auckland Secondary School Road Running Championships.
It's been a big week of racing for Lisa and Sarah Hellyer. Last Saturday the duo were part of the Auckland City Athletics team to contest the NZ Cross Country Championships held at Hagley North Park Christchurch. It wasn’t the race day Sarah and Lisa had hoped for, with both athletes battling illness, Sarah recovering from over a week unwell, and Lisa falling sick just before the weekend. Despite the setback, they showed true grit by finishing the race. While the result wasn’t what they trained for, their strong fitness foundation carried them through. Lisa was able to claim 3rd in the U18 5km in 18:49.87, while Sarah came in 13th in 20:22.64.
Just a few days later, they bounced back with confidence at the Auckland Secondary School Road Running Championships at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura on Tuesday 5th August. Still fighting through their recovery, the runners scorched the field in the Senior Girls 4km to claim 1st (Lisa Hellyer 13:07) and 2nd (Sarah Hellyer 13:15), showing they’re back on track for to finish their season strong. Ka rawe kōrua!
