Junior students considering joining the Health Science Academy next year attended Hato Hone St John’s ’ 3 Steps for Life’ programme in the hall yesterday.
Jess Bates from St John's took the programme, keeping the students engaged and involved, while they learnt the steps to take when assessing a patient. They now know 3 ways to check whether a person is breathing and, in the event of cardiac arrest, when a patient has stopped breathing, how to perform CPR. Students could be heard enthusiastically singing the two rounds of ‘Row, Row Row Your Boat’ that gave them the correct timing needed to complete the 30 compressions and 2 breaths required for CPR. They realised quite quickly that performing CPR is a strenuous exercise!
This was a worthwhile and enjoyable exercise. Students left the programme feeling empowered and looking forward to joining the academy in 2026.
