The coveted Ara Visual Arts Scholar title has been awarded to this year’s top emerging young artist, recognising one of Auckland’s most promising creative talents.
Holly van Doleweerd graduated from Onehunga High School in 2025. She was selected by the Head of Arts as Onehunga High School’s 2025 Visual Arts Scholar. Her senior painting portfolio showed depth, originality, and strong ideas.
It earned Excellence in the NCEA external assessment and impressed the Ara Lodge selectors. Each year, they honour one outstanding Auckland school leaver for achievement in visual arts. Holly received her award at the Ara Art Awards ceremony on Friday 13 February 2026 in central Auckland. The event brought together young artists, families, and educators. It celebrated creative achievement and the many pathways available in the arts.
Holly also received a 1500 dollar award to support her tertiary studies. Her painting folio is on display at the awards venue. This gives audiences the chance to view the high standard of her work. The ceremony includes an exhibition of each scholar’s portfolio, guest speakers, reflections from a past award recipient, and live musical performances.
This achievement is an important milestone for Holly. Onehunga High School is very proud of her success and wishes her every success as she continues her creative journey.
