Lisa and Sarah Hellyer achieved remarkable success at the New Zealand Athletics Championships, each claiming a national U20 title in the middle-distance events.
Lisa won the U20 800m in an impressive 2:08, producing a strong finishing kick to secure the national title. Sarah followed closely to take second place, making it an excellent result for the Onehunga High School athletes.
In the U20 1500m final, Sarah turned the tables with a superb run to win the national title in 4:23. Lisa finished second in 4:24 after another tightly contested race, with the result decided by just 0.08 seconds.
Their performances highlighted the strength of their training and determination, competing successfully against the best young middle-distance runners in the country.
Following their success at the championships, both athletes have received invitations from three universities in the United States. In April, they will travel with their family on a college-funded trip to visit the campuses and explore opportunities to continue both their academic studies and athletics careers in the American collegiate system.
Congratulations to Lisa and Sarah Hellyer for their outstanding achievements and for representing Onehunga High School with pride on the national stage.
