Jenica Quino (Year 11) – Te Haerenga Marae Drawing Showcases Skill and Cultural Insight

A detailed observational drawing project exploring the carvings of Te Haerenga Marae through technical skill and cultural understanding.

As part of the Year 11 Māori Art programme, students completed observational drawings of Te Haerenga Marae, focusing on the detailed carvings found at the front gate. This work forms part of a 5-credit Achievement Standard and encouraged students to closely study both the artistic and cultural significance of the marae.

Jenica Quino (Year 11) produced a highly refined graphite pencil drawing that captures a section of the carved entrance. Her work shows a strong understanding of form, with careful attention to the curves and depth of the carving.

Through the use of soft shading, Jenica creates a sense of depth and texture, suggesting the aged surface of the wood. The subtle blending gives the drawing a “deep softness,” allowing the details of the carving to stand out while maintaining a natural, realistic finish.

This piece reflects both technical control and an appreciation of the cultural significance of Te Haerenga Marae, demonstrating the learning and focus developed throughout the programme.
