Alumni return to OHS with the Auckland Rugby Pro Sport Programme to share experiences and promote future pathways.
Students at OHS today welcomed Paul Van Etten, programme leader of the Auckland Rugby Pro Sport Programme, along with a group of current participants, including former OHS students who returned to share their experiences.
The visit provided valuable insight into the programme and what it offers. Hearing from alumni gave current students a genuine perspective on life after school and the opportunities available through the course.
The Pro Sport Programme is designed to give young people experience across all areas of rugby, including coaching, training, and event management. The one year course includes daily lessons and practical involvement in match day operations and rugby events across Auckland. Participants also support coaching clinics at primary schools, contributing to the development of the game at grassroots level.
A key aim of the programme is to build a stronger Auckland community through rugby. Students develop leadership skills while gaining hands on experience and contributing to the wider rugby community. The importance of volunteers is also emphasised, particularly referees, who play a vital role in ensuring games can take place.
The visit encouraged students to consider future pathways that combine sport, leadership, and community involvement. It was valuable to host the group and to see alumni giving back by sharing their journey with the next generation.
