A spirited second-half performance showed the determination and potential of this talented team.
The Onehunga High School Junior Girls football team began their top-pool campaign this week after an impressive qualifying phase that saw them finish second and earn a place among the competition's strongest teams. Facing an unbeaten St Cuthbert’s side, the girls found themselves 2–0 down at halftime after a challenging first half. While the scoreline reflected a slow start, the response after the break showcased the determination and character that have been a feature of the team's season.
The second half was a much-improved performance, with the girls competing strongly against one of the top teams in the competition. Their increased intensity, work rate, and confidence allowed them to match St Cuthbert’s for long periods and create opportunities of their own. Although the final score remained 2–0, the second-half display provided plenty of encouragement. The team demonstrated resilience, refused to give in, and showed they belong in the top division.
With only their second loss of the season, the girls will take valuable lessons from the match and look to build on their strong finish as they prepare for the next round of competition.
