Year 12 students developed their understanding of healthcare careers at Middlemore Hospital.

On 4 August, our Year 12 Health Science Academy students visited Middlemore Hospital to explore future academic and career pathways within the health sector. The visit provided direct insight into a professional healthcare environment and the range of careers available. Throughout the day, students visited several specialist departments, including clinical engineering, radiography, anaesthesia and orthopaedics. They learned about the different professions within each area and the knowledge, skills and qualifications required to pursue these careers.

Students also developed a greater understanding of how specialist teams work together to support patient care. Seeing these roles within a hospital environment provided valuable context for their current studies and demonstrated the breadth of opportunities available within healthcare. A highlight was hearing from OHS alumna and former Head Girl Shekinah Gafa, who is now practising as a midwife. Shekinah spoke about her pathway from secondary school to tertiary study and into her professional career. Her experience provided students with a valuable example of where further study in health can lead.

The visit strengthened students’ understanding of the academic and professional pathways available in healthcare and provided valuable insight as they consider their own future study and career options.
