A practical PE session introduced students to the skills and challenges of adaptive sport.
Our Year 9 students had the opportunity to experience wheelchair basketball this week during a special PE session with Alyssa Diamond-Lord and Disability Auckland. Students quickly learned how to manoeuvre the wheelchairs while developing the passing, shooting and coordination skills required to play the game. The fast pace and different physical demands created an engaging challenge, with students enthusiastic to develop their skills throughout the session.
The experience also gave students a practical introduction to adaptive sport. By participating themselves, they developed a greater understanding of how sport can be adapted to enable people with different physical abilities to compete and participate. The enthusiasm in the gym was clear, with students passing by stopping to watch and asking if they could join in.
Thank you to Alyssa Diamond-Lord and Disability Auckland for providing our Year 9 students with such an enjoyable and valuable learning experience.
