Jack reflects on leadership, the season and representing OHS in Rotorua.

Jack van Houts has been playing football since he was five years old, beginning with Onehunga Māngere United AFC. He has continued with the sport because he enjoys both the competition and the game itself. Now in his second year with the OHS Boys’ 1st XI, Jack stepped forward for the captaincy during preseason and has enjoyed the additional responsibility that has come with leading the team.

“It was pretty cool to get named captain this year. Being a leader to the rest of the boys was something I put my name up for in the preseason and it’s been an extra responsibility that I’ve enjoyed.”

Jack’s leadership is focused on involving everyone, expecting full effort and keeping the team positive. “I like to get everyone in the team involved, make sure they’re putting in 100% effort and make sure the team is in positive spirits before heading into games.”

The season has included some challenging results, with several close games ending in draws or narrow losses. However, the Boys’ 1st XI finished their season with some strong wins and will take that momentum into the Trident Tournament in Rotorua.

The tournament will give Jack and the team the opportunity to compete against quality opposition from across the North Island. “We’ll go into the tournament with a good mindset, put in 100% and have some fun.”

For younger footballers coming through OHS, Jack’s advice is simple: “Play with passion and give it your all.”
