Our Senior A co-captains look ahead to their final tournament campaign.

Tiaki Strickland and Tyler Tahapeehi-Litaio have been part of OHS basketball since Year 9. Now approaching 50 games for the Senior A side, the co-captains will lead the team into the AA Premiership tournament, which begins tomorrow. Both have been part of the senior side since 2024 and have developed as players and leaders during that time. For Tiaki, the experience has reinforced the importance of consistency and trust, while Tyler points to discipline, team culture and staying composed during difficult games.

Being given the opportunity to captain the team is something both value. “To be trusted by the coaches and the team to lead the side is something I don’t take for granted,” Tiaki said. “Being able to lead the team in my final year makes it even more meaningful.” Both lead through their actions. Tiaki focuses on setting the standard through his work ethic and how he responds when things are not going the team’s way. Tyler also leads by example and makes a point of ensuring everyone feels involved.

The Senior A team head into the tournament following a strong season, reaching the Central West final and finishing in the top four at the Greater Auckland Basketball Tournament. Both captains believe stronger communication, team chemistry and a greater contribution across the whole squad have been important to their progress.

Their focus for the AA Premiership is clear. “Our main goal is to compete,” Tiaki said. “We want to go into every game believing we have a chance.” Tyler agrees, with the team aiming to compete with the best, give everything they have and make a deep run in the tournament. For younger basketballers coming through OHS, their advice is to get involved early and make the most of every opportunity. Work hard, listen to coaches and senior players, and enjoy representing the school.
