OHS remembers an outstanding athlete who excelled at school and nationally.

Onehunga High School was saddened to hear of the recent passing of alumnus Peter Reeves, aged 80, following a long illness. Peter was an outstanding athlete during his years at OHS and went on to achieve considerable success in New Zealand athletics.

At school, Peter dominated middle distance running and represented Onehunga High School with distinction in inter secondary athletics. Many who knew him will remember his success across the 440 yards, 880 yards, one mile and cross country. His achievements were recognised in the 1964 OHS Magazine and remain an important part of our school’s sporting history.

The following obituary appeared on Athletics New Zealand’s website this week:

“Former national junior middle distance champion during the mid-1960’s Peter Reeves of Auckland passed away, after a long illness, on Friday 28 August aged 80. He won back to back New Zealand junior 880 yards titles in 1964 in Lower Hutt in 1:56.9 and in 1965 in Dunedin in 1:55.2. As a senior he was second in the New Zealand 5000m championship in Hamilton in 1972 after finishing third the previous year in Inglewood. In 1973 in Wellington he was fifth in the 5000m championship. As a 19 year old he ran in the 1966 Rotorua Marathon in 2:40:45 finishing 15th.”

Peter was a very talented athlete and a credit to Onehunga High School. His achievements at OHS and in national competition are a legacy of which our school can be proud.
