Congratulations to our debating team on second place and outstanding individual speaker awards.
The Onehunga High School Debating Team achieved an excellent result on Friday 25 September, finishing runners-up in the Southside Project Interschool Debating Tournament. After progressing through the competition to reach the Grand Final, OHS faced a strong De La Salle College team, who went on to win the tournament. Our students delivered an impressive performance and can be very proud of their achievement.
Representing OHS in the Grand Final were Ja-bez Halasima (Year 12), Harley Taufelila (Year 11) and Cleo Milne (Year 12). The team demonstrated strong reasoning, effective communication and the ability to respond confidently to challenging arguments throughout the competition.
OHS also achieved outstanding individual results, with Cleo Milne named Best Speaker of the Tournament, Harley Taufelila placing third and Mariam Osman (Year 12) placing fifth in the overall speaker awards. Having three OHS students recognised among the tournament's top five speakers is a significant achievement.
We are proud of our debaters and their success this year. A special thank you to Ms Plowman for her support and guidance throughout the competition. Well done to the entire team on representing OHS so successfully.
