Year 11 student recognised at a Māori rugby league tournament in Brisbane.
Year 11 student Montana Roebeck travelled to Brisbane on 10 October to compete in the Te Whenua Ariki Māori Rugby League Tournament as a member of the Under-15 Hokianga Storm team, which is affiliated with Te Māhurehure Marae. The marae played an important role in helping fundraise for Montana's trip.
Montana was pleased with his performance throughout the tournament and was scouted by a rugby league official. Keen to pursue the sport further, he primarily plays in the second row and occasionally at centre.
The Hokianga Storm finished third overall in the competition.
Following the team's final game in the semi-finals, a prizegiving was held to recognise the best back, best forward and Most Valuable Player. Montana was named MVP in recognition of his determination, effort and communication throughout the tournament, as well as his ability to remain positive and composed after difficult moments on the field.
Montana also acknowledged the important role his teammates played in making the tour so memorable."I would like to give a shout-out to my brothers who played alongside me. They never gave up on me and were always there to support me whenever I made an error on the field. Off the field, our bond was unbreakable, and I am proud of how happy and special they made the tour for me," he said.
While in Australia, Montana also had the opportunity to explore attractions in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, making the trip both a valuable sporting experience and a memorable opportunity to travel.
Congratulations to Montana on his achievements and on representing his team, marae and community on the international stage.
