The OHS Sports Academy recently had the privilege of hosting a session with Gavin Clearkin, an elite-level sports nutritionist.
Gavin brings a wealth of experience, having worked with powerhouse teams like the Warriors, Blues, NZ Cricket, and the Breakers, as well as iconic individual athletes such as Dame Valerie Adams and Joseph Parker.
During his presentation, Gavin focused on four key areas essential for optimising performance and long-term sports health: Technical Proficiency, Skill Development, Physical Fitness and Mental Health. The students gained deep insights into the science of sports nutrition, learning not just what to eat, but also when and how to fuel, the timing and frequency of carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake, hydration strategies, and recovery nutrition.
Gavin concluded the session with a Q&A on common diet myths and professional guidance on supplement use.
The visit was a highly valuable experience that better equipped our Sports Academy students to elevate their performance.
