Students are building ruru nesting boxes while developing skills and a growing passion for conservation.
Technology students are currently working on an engaging project in partnership with the school’s Enviro Club to build nesting boxes for ruru (morepork owls). Work on the nesting boxes is ongoing, with students making steady progress during available class time alongside their other projects. Elijah Isaaka, Sanalio Latu, Moe Apelu, and Andrew Astrella are leading the project. As the boxes near completion, members of the Enviro Club will play an important role in the final stages, assisting with sanding and finishing so the boxes are ready for use in the local environment.
The project has also sparked strong interest in ruru among the students. This growing curiosity reflects a meaningful connection between practical learning and environmental awareness. It has been encouraging to see students combining technical skills with a genuine interest in conservation and the natural world, demonstrating the wider impact of the project beyond the workshop.
The completed nesting boxes will be given to Maungakiekie Songbird members from July.
