Students gained valuable real-world insight into business operations through an engaging, hands-on experience
Our Year 9 and 10 Business Studies students swapped the classroom for a day of hands-on learning at the Chelsea Sugar Refinery this semester. While the sweet treats were certainly a hit, the real highlight was seeing a major New Zealand business in action and gaining a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the country’s most recognisable brands operates. From towering machinery to fast-moving production lines, students explored the inner workings of the iconic refinery and followed the journey of sugar from raw material to finished product. Seeing large-scale manufacturing up close brought Business Studies concepts to life in a way that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom.
The day offered plenty of opportunities to get involved. Students tested their culinary skills at the Edmonds Baking School and explored the Interactive Zone, where they discovered the science, technology, and innovation that drive modern food production. These experiences added an extra layer of excitement while helping students better understand the processes behind the products they use every day.
Visits like this play an important role in Business Studies. Students were able to see firsthand how concepts such as production, operations, marketing, and quality control work together in a successful organisation. Observing these processes in action helped deepen their understanding of how businesses create value, respond to customer needs, and remain competitive in a constantly changing marketplace.
The trip was an engaging and memorable experience that combined learning with discovery, giving our future entrepreneurs valuable insight into the world of business beyond the classroom.
