Connecting Students with Industry Professionals

Connecting Students with Industry Professionals

This week OHS students explored a range of career pathways this week through direct engagement with professionals from business, technology, law and engineering.

A key focus of our careers programme is connecting students directly with professionals, providing opportunities to explore future study and career pathways through real-world experiences. Students interested in law also had the opportunity to meet with Joseph Xulue from Meredith Connell. He spoke about the realities of studying law, the diverse career pathways a legal qualification can provide and his experiences working as a courtroom lawyer.

Year 13 student Rhys Anstis spent the day shadowing Simon Kennedy, Chief Digital Officer at Foodstuffs. Rhys gained insight into leadership within a large organisation, with a focus on large-scale logistics and strategic planning. Fellow Year 13 student Brooklyn Corliss spent the day with Brooke McKinnon, Enterprise Account Manager at Hewlett Packard. Brooklyn learnt more about her role in the fast-paced world of global technology and the opportunities available within the sector.

Our Māori and Pacific senior students considering Engineering and STEM qualifications met with Steve Watkinson to learn more about the support available through the University of Auckland. Students were introduced to academic support specifically for Māori and Pacific students, including free Calculus and Physics tutoring available while they are still at school. These experiences provide students with valuable opportunities to hear directly from professionals, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the pathways available as they begin planning for their futures.

These experiences are just some of the many opportunities available through our careers programme. Students are encouraged to regularly visit the OHS Careers website at https://ohs.careerwise.school/ to explore upcoming events, scholarships, tertiary information and industry opportunities. Students are also welcome to speak with Mrs Shaw in the Careers Office for guidance and support as they plan their future pathways.
