OHS SchoolTV Explores the Importance of Matariki

OHS SchoolTV Explores the Importance of Matariki

Discover the significance of Matariki and explore practical ways to celebrate the Māori New Year as a whānau.

Matariki marks the Māori New Year and the beginning of te maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar. It is a significant time in Aotearoa to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and look to the future with hope. Named after the cluster of nine stars that rises in the winter sky, Matariki has guided Māori for generations. Traditionally, the appearance of the stars signalled the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new year. It was a time to gather with whānau, give thanks for the harvest, honour loved ones who had passed away, and set aspirations for the year ahead. Today, Matariki continues to provide an opportunity for all New Zealanders to learn more about te ao Māori and celebrate the values of remembrance, gratitude, community and renewal.

To support families in learning more about Matariki, SchoolTV has developed a special report exploring its history, traditions and cultural significance. The report explains the meaning of the Matariki star cluster, its connection to the seasons, and the important role it has played in Māori knowledge and navigation. It also highlights how Matariki is celebrated today and why it has become an important occasion for communities throughout Aotearoa. The special report includes a range of resources for families, including a video, practical ideas for celebrating Matariki together, activities for children and links to further learning. Whether you are already familiar with Matariki or are looking to deepen your understanding, these resources provide a valuable starting point for learning together as a whānau.

We encourage our school community to take the time to explore the SchoolTV Matariki Special Report and celebrate this important time in Aotearoa's calendar. Read the SchoolTV Matariki Special Report
