From the OHS Stage to Screen: Celebrating Alumnus Wesley Dowdell

Former Onehunga High School student Wesley Dowdell credits a visit from theatre pioneer Sam Scott with inspiring the career that has made him one of New Zealand's most respected actors.

Onehunga High School is proud to celebrate the achievements of alumnus Wesley Dowdell, whose impressive career in theatre, television and film continues to inspire the next generation of performers. A member of the 1997 Year 13 class, Wesley graduated alongside fellow OHS alumna and acclaimed actor, writer, and comedian Madeleine Sami. Together, they are among a number of former students who have gone on to make a significant contribution to New Zealand's performing arts industry.

Wesley has built an impressive career with leading roles in Outrageous Fortune, Westside, The Brokenwood Mysteries, One Lane Bridge, Shortland Street, Madam, and feature films including Punch, Pike River, and The World's Fastest Indian. Alongside his screen career, he has enjoyed an acclaimed career on stage and is now a director, teacher, and long-standing member of Massive Theatre Company.

In a recent interview celebrating Massive Theatre Company's 35th anniversary, Wesley reflected on the moment that changed his life. While he was a student at Onehunga High School, Massive founder Sam Scott visited the school to lead a drama workshop. At the time, Wesley planned to become a helicopter pilot, but the workshop sparked a passion for acting that changed the direction of his life. He later joined Massive Theatre at the age of 18, describing that experience as the beginning of his professional acting career.

Wesley's story is a powerful reminder of how a single opportunity can inspire a lifelong passion. We are incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and of the contribution he continues to make to New Zealand's arts community.

Congratulations, Wesley - we are proud to call you an OHS alumnus.
