Year 9 Social Studies: Developing Historical Understanding

Students are analysing historical sources and working collaboratively to explore life on the Western Front during the First World War.

Year 9 students at Onehunga High School are currently studying the First World War as part of their Social Studies programme. Throughout the unit, students are developing an in-depth understanding of the causes of the war, significant events, New Zealand's role in the conflict, and the lasting impact the war had on New Zealand society.

Today, students in 9DV took part in a collaborative learning activity, investigating different aspects of daily life on the Western Front. Working in mixed-ability groups, they analysed a range of historical sources, including written accounts, photographs and maps, before sharing their findings with the class.

Learning through collaboration enables students to discuss ideas, analyse evidence from different perspectives and deepen their understanding of historical events. It also develops important communication, critical thinking and teamwork skills that support learning across the curriculum. Year 9 student Fane Kata said she enjoys group learning at Onehunga High School because "it is interesting and helps to keep me motivated."

Through engaging learning experiences such as these, students are developing the historical knowledge and analytical skills needed to understand the significance of the First World War and its enduring impact on New Zealand and the wider world.
