Onehunga High School proudly entered its first Under 18 Flag Football team into the New Zealand American Football Federation (NZAFF) Flag Football Tournament at Aorere Park on Wednesday 29 July. The team, made up of eight Year 13 students and one Year 10 student, made an excellent start to the day. They defeated Manurewa High School 33–26 before recording a convincing 26–6 win over Aorere College.

The team then faced Rutherford College, who went on to win the tournament. They finished pool play with a narrow 20–18 loss to Tangaroa College, with the match decided on the final play. Onehunga High School finished sixth overall after competing in the 5th/6th playoff. For a team competing in the tournament for the first time, it was an outstanding achievement. Throughout the day, the players showed resilience, teamwork and a willingness to learn.

Flag Football is becoming increasingly popular at Onehunga High School. It is now part of the Year 11 Physical Education curriculum through Achievement Standard 1.2, giving students the opportunity to experience one of the world's fastest-growing sports. With Flag Football set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, there is growing interest in the sport across New Zealand.
