Invited to the New Zealand premiere of Big Girls Don't Cry, directed by Paloma Schneideman.

Three Onehunga High School students and their teacher were invited to attend the opening night of the New Zealand International Film Festival, where they attended the New Zealand premiere of Big Girls Don't Cry, directed by Paloma Schneideman.

Students Ayla Wyness, Sophia Ren and Ashton Mahy walked the red carpet at Auckland's iconic Civic Theatre before joining an audience of more than 2,300 people for the premiere. The evening began with opening remarks from the Chair of the New Zealand International Film Festival, followed by speeches from the film's producers, director and writer ahead of its New Zealand debut. Big Girls Don't Cry is a coming-of-age drama that follows the experiences of a teenage girl over one summer. Filmed around Omaha and Te Henga (Bethells Beach), the film captures the distinctive landscapes of Aotearoa and explores the uniquely New Zealand experience of growing up surrounded by beaches and native bush.

Following the screening, Ayla, Sophia and Ashton were interviewed about their impressions of the film. All three students gave thoughtful, articulate and insightful responses, reflecting on the film's themes and the impact of the story. Adding to the memorable evening, Onehunga High School Class of 2025 graduate and NCEA Drama Scholarship recipient Elise Woodward was seated directly behind the OHS group. Elise is currently studying in the Unitec Acting Programme alongside the film's lead actor, Ani Palmer, making the occasion an unexpected and enjoyable connection for the students.

The invitation provided a unique opportunity for the students to experience the opening night of New Zealand's premier film festival, gain an insight into the country's film industry, and celebrate the debut of a new New Zealand feature film.
