Our Boys Open A Grade basketball team defeated Western Springs last night to book a place in the Central Western final and qualify for the Greater Auckland Championships. Our Boys Open A Grade basketball team delivered an outstanding performance last night, defeating Western Springs on their home court in the Central Western Open A Grade semi final to book a place in next week's final.
The win was especially satisfying for the team, who had never previously beaten Western Springs on their home court. The match was closely contested through the opening three quarters before OHS produced a dominant final quarter to pull away for a convincing 20 point victory. It was a genuine team effort, with every player making an important contribution.
Head of Basketball Academy Anthony Keung praised the team's composure and ability to perform under pressure.
"It was a great team victory. Everybody contributed. The game was close through the first three quarters, but the boys stepped up when it mattered most and finished strongly."
The win also secures OHS a place at the Greater Auckland Championships, where the top two teams from the Harbour, Counties, East and Central Western zones will compete. A top two finish at the tournament would earn promotion to the next division.
Keung said the result reflects the progress being made within the Basketball Academy programme.
"The boys really stepped up on the big occasion. We've been working hard to build the right culture, and it's great to see that starting to show in games like this."
The team will now contest next week's Central Western Open A Grade final before turning its attention to the Greater Auckland Championships. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff, and best of luck for the final and the Greater Auckland Championships.
