Year 11 student Nevaeh Letiu leads the OHS Premier Netball team in her second season at the top level.

For our second Captain’s Spotlight, we catch up with Premier Netball captain Nevaeh Letiu, who has been playing netball since she was seven.

Nevaeh developed her game through Māngere East Hawks and the Māngere Ōtāhuhu representative programme before joining OHS, where she has represented the school for the past two years. A defensive player, Nevaeh enjoys the intensity and competitive nature of the game, as well as the opportunities netball provides to work with new teammates and coaches and face different competition. Despite being only in Year 11 and in her second season with the Premier team, Nevaeh was selected as captain this year.

“I was very surprised and humbled to be named captain, but it is rewarding to see my leadership and other values recognised.”

Nevaeh describes her approach to captaincy as leading by example, both at training and on court. She also sees communication as an important part of her role, encouraging and supporting her teammates while remaining open to learning from coaches and those around her. 

This season has brought new coaches, players and opportunities for the team. Competing in additional tournaments has given the squad valuable game time and helped them continue developing ahead of one of their biggest events of the year – UNISS 2026 in Hamilton.

“Our goal is to compete well and hopefully win all our games, placing us in a position to be in a higher grade next year.”

Nevaeh is also looking forward to the experience of travelling and competing away from home, including the opportunity to face schools from other regions. Her advice for students considering netball at OHS is simple: give it a go.

“There are many opportunities that netball offers. You form close relationships as a team, while also learning and improving new skills.”
