Year 9 Tongan students have begun another year of leadership, cultural learning and connection through the Fakatoukatea Indigenous Leadership Programme.

The Fakatoukatea Indigenous Leadership Programme has commenced its 12th year at Onehunga High School, welcoming a new group of Year 9 Tongan students for 2026. The first session was held on Friday 7 August, with 17 students and one parent attending. A total of 19 Year 9 students have been confirmed to take part in the programme this year.

Fakatoukatea is led by Anahila Kanongata’a and Sosepa Hausia-Schaumkel, who have worked alongside Onehunga High School students for the past 11 years. Their continued leadership provides students with an opportunity to develop their understanding of leadership within a framework grounded in Tongan values, identity and culture. The opening session focused on Manatu, an important foundation of Fakatoukatea. Through talatalanoa and art, students explored the values of ‘Ofa, Fatongia, Tukupā and Tauhi, considering how these principles are reflected in the way they lead, serve and contribute within their families, school and wider community.

There is a strong connection between these principles and the values expressed in the Onehunga High School motto, Loyalty and Courage – Loto Mateaki mo e Loto To'a. Through the programme, students are encouraged to strengthen their cultural identity and relationships while developing the confidence and understanding to contribute as young leaders. We acknowledge Anahila Kanongata’a and Sosepa Hausia-Schaumkel for their ongoing leadership of Fakatoukatea and for the time, knowledge and care they continue to give to our students. We also acknowledge Dr Linita Manu’atu, who has supported Fakatoukatea since its inception and will join students for an upcoming session.
