Meet Year 10 student and Junior 1st XI football captain Wiremu Barnard.

Being named captain of the Junior 1st XI was a special moment for Wiremu, particularly as it was his first time taking on a captaincy role.

“It was a great opportunity to take a step up in my football journey and become a better player.”

For Wiremu, leadership is about looking after his teammates both on and off the field. He sees an important part of his role as keeping players calm during games, avoiding unnecessary trouble and making sure the team stays focused.

The Junior 1st XI have enjoyed a strong season, including a long unbeaten run before a playoff loss ended their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

“We are now playing for fifth and we will make sure to finish strong.”

Next up is the Hillsdene Junior Tournament, which Wiremu will attend for the second time. Having experienced the tournament last year, he knows many of the teams they are likely to face and has a clear goal in mind.

“I believe our goal as a team would be to try to win the tournament, which I believe we can do.”

For students thinking about getting involved in football at OHS, Wiremu’s advice is simple: make the most of your opportunity.

“Try your hardest and don’t hide away. If you want to trial, give it your best shot.”
