Students explored engineering pathways and the opportunities offered by tertiary study.

This week, a group of Year 11 OHS students visited the University of Auckland to participate in an engineering outreach programme. The experience provided an excellent opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom and develop their understanding of engineering as both an academic discipline and a future career pathway. The event was supported by SPIES, the South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students association, which supports Māori and Pasifika students studying engineering and works to inspire future generations of engineers. 

Throughout the day, students were introduced to university study, engineering pathways and the range of opportunities available within the profession. The experience encouraged students to consider how their learning in Science and Mathematics can connect with further study and careers in engineering. The SPIES outreach programme provides students with exposure to university engineering pathways while building confidence, leadership and connections with the wider engineering community. 

Opportunities such as this support students to make informed and ambitious decisions about their future. As our Year 11 students begin to consider their senior subject choices and tertiary pathways, experiencing a university environment and learning more about engineering gives them a clearer understanding of where strong academic achievement can lead.
