Te Wiki o te Reo Māori was celebrated through reo, kai and coming together as a kura.

As part of our OHS celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga were brought to life through a special shared kai for our whole kura. At second break, close to 1,000 students and staff were invited to enjoy freshly prepared fried bread together.

Preparing kai on this scale was a significant undertaking. Our Whānau class stayed overnight in the whare to prepare, working together so everything was ready for the following day. By second break, the smell of freshly cooked fried bread filled the school as students formed an orderly queue and waited patiently to be served. The kai was very well received and enjoyed by students and staff.

The occasion was an important expression of manaakitanga, showing care, generosity and hospitality to others, and whanaungatanga, strengthening relationships and our sense of connection. Feeding our whole kura required considerable work, but it also demonstrated these values in a genuine and practical way.

A special thank you to our Whānau class and everyone who contributed to preparing and serving the kai. Their efforts created a memorable part of our Te Wiki o te Reo Māori celebrations and brought our kura together. He mihi nui ki a koutou.
