Recognising the outstanding achievements of our Pasifika students in 2026.
Our annual Pasifika Awards ceremony was a wonderful evening of celebration, bringing together students, whānau and staff to recognise the achievements of our Pasifika students throughout 2026.
The evening opened with traditional conch and drums, followed by a pao performed by Aiveni Fahina and Dornia Silupe-Ulumani. Our Pasifika Choir and Kapa Haka group provided performances, while Year 11 student Isabella Cathro, shared her reflections with the audience.
In her address, Principal Shameen Hayat reflected on the significant improvement in Pasifika academic achievement at OHS. In 2025, our Pasifika students achieved NCEA pass rates above 80 percent at all three levels, an important milestone for our school. She emphasised the importance of students being proud of their cultural identity and recognising it as a source of strength in their education. She also acknowledged the hard work of our students and the important support provided by their teachers and whānau.
We were privileged to welcome former OHS student Anahila Kanongata’a as our guest speaker. Anahila has maintained a strong connection with the school through her leadership of the Fakatoukatea Tongan Leadership Programme, now in its twelfth year. Having recently completed her Master's degree with First Class Honours, she shared her own educational journey and encouraged students to have high aspirations, remain connected to their culture and persevere in pursuing their goals.
Throughout the evening, students were recognised for academic excellence at NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3, alongside achievements in sport, culture and leadership.
Our highest academic honour, Pasifika Top Scholar for 2026, was awarded to Levi Ahlam. Levi received Excellence awards in five Level 3 subjects: Chemistry, English, Mathematics with Calculus, Physical Education and Physics. This is an outstanding achievement and reflects his dedication to his studies.
