Willie Marsters: The Quiet Achiever.

Mr Steve Frear has been the teacher in charge of rugby at OHS for many years. He reflects on the humble role Willie Marsters has played in OHS rugby success.

Willie Marsters has been involved in OHS Rugby, as a community coach over the last few years. He has coached all 3 of his children in this sport.

Last season, his eldest son made the Blues squad. Undeniably, dad’s mentoring steered Mataora to this accolade.

This season has been notable. Willie has coached both of his children, in the Boys’ U15 team, and in the Girls’ 10s team. This undertaking has required him to attend to these teams 6 days a week, for the best part of 2 terms.

He worked magic with both squads. The U15 boys looked a disparate collection early on. He provided a structure and discipline to be envious of. He did the same with the girls team. Their winning the Auckland 10s title is now the stuff of history.

Willie has that ability to galvanise and bring together all stakeholders. He speaks in his usual way: positive, inclusive, knowledgeable and always with a smile. The students are invited to both listen and contribute. His tactics are based around his teams strengths, often nuanced, at times wisely counterintuitive. The manner in which success was achieved with his girls’ team reflects his approach to life, a lesson for anyone paying attention. Thank you sir.
