One of the highlights of the year for some students is their involvement in MUNA, the Model United Nations Assembly.
MUNA aims to educate and engage students in global issues, diplomacy, and the workings of the United Nations by simulating UN debates and decision-making processes.
More than 300 students and their teachers from Auckland and Northland gathered together at Rosmini College to discuss, debate, and try to come to a consensus about how to deal with some of the world’s most pressing problems. The topics discussed were as varied as they were interesting. They included the requirement for the internet to be accessible for all people, the use of Artificial Intelligence in weaponry and surveillance, exploitative trade practices, and climate reparations for developing countries. To make the experience more challenging, students had to answer questions as each respective country would. They discovered it is not always easy to get a consensus when each country comes with its own agenda.
OHS had three teams attending this year: Vinnie Carter 13 Lu, Reese Kilpatrick 12 Gb, and Cleo Milne 11Kn were allocated to Belarus. Laura McFelin 13 Ki, Lara Aitchison 12 Lt, and Ja-bez Halasima 11 Mi represented Finland, while Hal Jackson 12 Gb, Nathan Marshall 11Me, Ronan Laing 11Mi, and Lawrence Stanley-Shuster 12 Tr spoke on behalf of Papua New Guinea.
MUNA was an outstanding success, thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. Special thanks to Rotary for their sponsorship of this event, and in particular, the Rotary Club of Maungakiekie for their sponsorship of our students.
