Samoan Language Week (Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa) is celebrated annually in New Zealand to promote the Samoan language and culture. It is a week-long event filled with activities that celebrate the language, traditions, and identity of Samoan people.
At OHS this week is Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. The theme for this year is 'Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – A well-grounded self is a successful self.
The week was officially opened with a formal ‘ava ceremony. In Samoan culture, the ceremony plays a significant role in fa’asamoa. The ‘ava is shared to mark important occasions, and the protocols around the ceremony are adhered to.
