Year 9 student Archer Linke made a strong impression over the break, proudly representing Onehunga High School and his dojo, Suzaku Kan Karate, on the national stage.
Competing at both the NZ Karate Open and the NZ National Schools Karate Championships in Christchurch, Archer stepped onto the mats for the first time at this elite level and came away with a bronze medal.
At the NZ Open, Archer showed grit and determination in kumite (sparring), bouncing back from a tough opening bout to secure third place and earn a spot on the podium. His kata (form/pattern) performance, while not medalling, was executed with calm focus, demonstrating that he has the discipline and skill to match the best.
The National Schools event brought more valuable experience. Although Archer was unable to advance past the first round of kumite, he once again completed his kata without fault, showcasing his consistency and strong technique.
While he may not have claimed multiple medals, Archer’s bronze in kumite at the NZ Open is a standout achievement – especially for a first-time competitor on the national scene. Even more exciting, his strong performances have earned him a move up to the premier division for both kumite and kata in the local Auckland league.
With competitions in Melbourne and Christchurch on the horizon, Archer’s journey in karate is clearly just beginning and the future looks bright. Ka rawe, Archer!
