We are proud to announce Zac King as the recipient of this week’s Waka Award for Year 9. Zac has been recognised for his excellent organisation in learning and his consistent demonstration of our school values across all settings. His teachers have highlighted his strong effort and positive attitude in class, as reflected in his recent school report.
Zac has particularly excelled in Physical Education, where he regularly steps out of his comfort zone to embrace new challenges that support both his wellbeing and physical literacy. Beyond the classroom, he is a key member of our unbeaten junior soccer team, where he continues to be a reliable and consistent performer.
Why the name has changed
Previously known as the Shooting Star Award, we have renamed this recognition the Waka Award to better reflect Onehunga High School’s values and learning journey. The waka is a powerful symbol in te ao Māori that represents progress, resilience, and unity. It speaks to the idea that while we each have our own journey, we also paddle together toward a shared destination.
The name also connects to Te Hiranga, our school marae and a place of excellence and aspiration. Just as the marae grounds us in who we are and where we come from, the Waka Award celebrates those who are moving forward with purpose, upholding our shared values of Respect, Resilience, Integrity and Excellence.
Zac is a shining example of these values in action. Ka rawe, Zac.
